Javni dug Srbije 12,13 mlrd. evra

Only Deutsche Telekom and Telekom Austria bid for Telekom Srbija?
Although seven companies have purchased the documentation for acquisition of a 51% stake in Telekom Srbija, serious bids will most likely be submitted only by Deutsche Telekom and Telekom Austria, the daily paper Press learns.

Economists are of the opinion that both companies are very serious in their intention to conquer the market of Serbia and advise the Government not to lower the price below EUR 1.4 billion!

France Telekom was the first to say "goodbye" to Telekom Srbija and it was very soon followed by Russian Vimplkom and Turkish Turkcell, as well as America Movil, which is in the possession of Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim. In that way, the story goes back to the beginning when Germans and Austrians were mentioned as the most probable buyers.

Ljubodrag Savic, a professor at the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade, thinks it would be best to cancel the tender and, thus, end "the inglorious episode of the sale of Telekom".

- Judging by what has happened over the past few months, primarily in the process of selection of the privatization adviser and with the deadline extension, the sale of a 51% stake in the national telecommunication company is not going as it was expected. Now we have two serious interested companies - Deutsche Telekom and Telekom Austria. Both have their motives and I believe they are very interested in entering our market - says Savic.

He says that the set price for Telekom is disputable.

- I will reiterate for the hundredth time that Telekom should not be sold because it is a profitable company and has a potential for development. I advocate cancellation of the tender, but if the Government of Serbia, by any chance, decides to sell Telekom after all, its price must not be lowered below EUR 1.4 billion - Savic concludes.

The price should not be lowered

Economist Aleksandar Stevanovic assesses that whoever offers more is the most serious bidder.

- Deutsche Telekom and Telekom Austria are certainly respectable companies. Greek OTE wrote in a letter to the Government that it was ready to sell its shares in the package. According to that plan, the new owner would buy 51% of shares for minimum EUR 1.4 billion, 31% of which from the state and 20% from the Greek operator. In that way, Serbia would get EUR 840 million, while EUR 560 million would go to the Greeks - Stevanovic reminds.
