Western Balkan countries ask for increase in IPA funds
National coordinators of the Western Balkan countries for the use of EU pre-accession funds (IPA) took a common stance regarding the use of this assistance at yesterday's meeting.

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic said to the press after the meeting with the national coordinators of Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, and Albania that they had proposed a gradual increase of the assistance to these countries prior to their admission to the community.

- In exchange, the assistance to these countries would decrease after the EU accession - said Mr. Djelic, Serbia's national coordinator for IPA funds.

He pointed out that the Western Balkan countries should get an opportunity to present their budgets to the EU officials in order to receive guarantees from the EU for entering capital markets, which would enable cheaper financing of budget deficits.

- We agreed to ask the EU to determine all the necessary conditions for obtaining this financial support - Djelic stated.

As he explained, one of the requests is to increase the involvement of national IPA coordinators in the formulation of policies for the use of assistance from the European budget for Western Balkan countries.

He stated that the agreement on common requests would be signed once the national coordinators received authorization from their governments.

As he explained, Croatia will not sign the agreement because it is about to join the EU.
