Conference center instead of Bazaar
The famous Bazaar could become a conference center and clothes shops might be replaced with halls for seminars and meetings and a congress hall.

The Belgrade Fair and the Association of Belgrade Architects (ABA) have opened a contest for the conceptual design for the reconstruction and adaptation of halls 7, 8 and 9 (where Bazaar is currently located) with the idea of turning the premises into a modern conference center.

The contest was announced on September 21 on the ABA-s website and the task is to come up with a solution for rearranging and repurposing the facility into a conference center with accompanying features. It is to be designed so that it can compete with modern business centers, and the plan is to have it function independently of other parts of the Fair, as a business center (not providing accommodation) for small and medium congresses, conferences, meetings, gatherings, seminars, presentations and lectures.

Hall 7 has a gross area of 1,235 m2, hall 8 – 1,920 m2, and hall 9 – 1,950 m2. All three were built in the 1966-67 period, whereas heated passageways were built in 2001. However, since the completion, there have been no significant investments in the complex. As stated in the documentation, a plan for heating and cooling the facility is prepared, but has not been implemented.

Designers first need to think up the solution for the area in front of the halls in order to form a plaza with the accompanying greenery and a parking zone. The main access to the halls should be oriented towards the plaza. Furthermore, new facades for all facilities need to be designed and space needs to be rearranged. The contest also entails designing the interior, along with the selection of furniture, equipment and lighting.

The conceptual design is supposed to contain the investment evaluation in all phases. It is important to note that designers are not allowed to change the volume of a facility in any way.

The conference center will contain a lobby, a grand hall, meeting halls, a cafeteria, resting zones, a work center, exhibition space and the accompanying administrative section.

The lobby will act as a buffer zone from which visitors will be directed to other parts of the complex, and it should also be able to accommodate smaller exhibits. The grand hall will be able to take up to 500 guests and will be used for congresses and conferences, larger lectures, events, anniversary celebrations, banquets and smaller concerts. The meeting halls are meant for business events exclusively and designers should plan two medium ones (with around 100 guests each) and 3-5 smaller ones (with 25 guests each), with the possibility of linking to form a larger work space. It is necessary for them to be separated from the accompanying rooms. The cafeteria should have a capacity of up to 50 people. Architects also need to examine the possibility of planning a garage and linking in to the existing parking lot in front of the head office.

The submission deadline is November 4 and the results are to be published on November 15. Participants also stand to receive awards.

As stated in the documentation, the aim is  -to come up with the best solutions for the future implementation of the project. The selected designs will serve as a basis for the preparation of the project documentation necessary for submitting a request for obtaining location requirements, followed by the preparation of the project for getting a building permit and the construction project (in case the investor, the Belgrade Fair, opts for such a procedure).
