Proizvođači i trgovci prozivaju državu

Pad BDP Srbije do jula 4,1 odsto

Kosmet – prvi put

Srpsku delegaciju, čiji se dolazak očekuje 4. oktobra, čine Mlađan Dinkić, ministar ekonomije, Diana Dragutinović, ministarska finansija, i Radovan Jelašić, guverner centralne banke.

Personal Services Sector Slowly Emerges in Serbia
[...]The personal services business is slowly emerging in Serbia as the economy and the franchising sector grow, while in neighboring Macedonia its development lags behind due to the low standard of living and insufficient disposable income of the population.
“I would agree that as Serbia continues to develop economically, there will be more demand for such services,” Cameron Werker, senior commercial officer at the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade, told SeeNews.
The personal services sector covers all of the services which contribute to improved living conditions of people, either in their own home or at their workplace.
INCOME LEVELS
The sophistication and development of the services industry is generally directly proportional to per-capita income, Werker said.
“That is, as per capita income increases, citizens have more disposable income that they spend on services that improve their quality of life,” Werker explained, adding that a big exception to this general rule is the cost of labour.
“In countries with very low labour costs, a wider array of personal services are inherently available. I would not include Serbia in the category of countries with very low labor costs. As a result, it is fair to say that the personal services sector in Serbia is not as developed as in the United States or Western countries,” Werker elaborated.
Serbs spend about 58% of their monthly income on basic items such as food, while a further 15% they spend on paying their utility bills, a recent study by Belgrade-based marketing research institute IZIT indicated.
Serbia’s per capita gross domestic product (GDP) rose to $6,685 in 2007 from $2,112 (3,087 euro) in 2002, according to International Monetary Fund (IMF) data.
Serbia posted strong economic growth before global crisis struck it last year. Serbia’s economy slowed its growth to a real 5.4% in 2008 from 6.9% in 2007 before contracting by a real 3.5% on the year in the first quarter of 2009. The country's economy will shrink by 4.0% this year before growing by 1.5% next year, the IMF said earlier this month.
The average monthly salary in Serbia is about 32,000 dinars, equivalent to some 350 euro, while the country’s unemployment rate of 15% is likely to remain unchanged throughout 2009, the country's Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic has said.
ERRAND BOY
Several friends in their mid-twenties were watching a soccer game in a Belgrade apartment when they decided to order some food.
“We wanted to order burgers and juices and realized there was no one offering this type of service,” co-founder and owner of Errand Boy, a service agency that buys and brings items to your door, Dragan Stancic, told SeeNews.
“No one was willing to sell you food below a certain price and/or go to the store for you. There was no takeout place that was willing to bring you products from various vendors and there was an endless fight going on between us, what we were going to order, burgers or pizza…
“That was how we got the idea to do this,” said Stancic.
Despite the crisis, owners say, Errand Boy has doubled its monthly turnover since January, when it started operations, and has encouraged the launching of similar companies across Belgrade, suggesting that a market for personal services, albeit a small one, does exist in the capital of Serbia.
No such service exists yet in Macedonia, while in Serbia Errand Boy and its spin-offs are limited to capital Belgrade.
Errand Boy, which started operation on January 1, charges 200 dinars for a service per one fiscal bill, that is per one store order. About half of its customers belong to the higher income bracket, while 30% are middle class. The remaining 20% of customers come from the lower class.
Errand Boy had an idea to open franchises in Valjevo (western Serbia), Kragujevac (central Serbia) and Novi Sad (the administrative centre of the Vojvodina province in the north), but there was absolutely no market for this type of service there, co-founder and owner Uros Stancic said.
“A lot of people in these towns work for 5,000 or 6,000 dinars a month. Major industries have halted production across Serbia and many towns are depressed so people can’t afford our service. We had a pilot project in Valjevo, testing the market there earlier this year. We printed flyers but people we recruited there gave up. We even considered cutting our fee. There was simply no interest,” Uros Stancic said.
FRANCHISING
An excellent way to meet increasing demand for personal services is to use the franchising concept, Werker said.
“Franchising encourages entrepreneurship, which is typically at the root of personal services operations,” Werker said, adding that personal service professionals, such as hair stylists and delivery services, are less likely to be of interest to foreign investors and more apt to develop through local entrepreneurship and franchising.
But expansion of franchising in Serbia faces setbacks due to lack of know-how and widespread misconceptions about start-up and operating costs. Even though franchising is on the rise in Serbia, the Balkan country is home to only about 25 foreign franchise operations at present, including fast-food restaurants McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut, realtors Century 21 and RE/Max, the Fornetti bakeries and office supply chain Office 1 Superstore.
In Macedonia, the promising franchising industry faces even bigger stumbling blocks mainly due to the country’s underdeveloped infrastructure and the lack of big retail centers. The exact number of franchisers in Macedonia is unknown.
LOCAL VENDORS AND THE CRISIS
Several hairstylists and taxi drivers polled by SeeNews in downtown Belgrade saw their revenue drop by between 20% and 50% since global crisis knocked at their doors about a year ago. Sales of local take-out restaurant Signora, which offers traditional Serbian food, reported a drop in sales of about 15%.
“Local minds needs to change towards relying on the kind of services we provide,” Signora founder and owner Aleksandar Tanaskovic told SeeNews, but added that the mushrooming of similar take-out places in Belgrade over the past few years is a strong indicator that the services sector has potential for growth.

External trade deficit narrows by 37.1% y/y to EUR 3.4bn in Jan-Aug

Serbia’s foreign trade deficit in the first eight months of this year amounted to EUR 3.4 billion, which is 37.1% less than in the same period last year, announced yesterday the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia. From January to August, the value of exports amounted to EUR 3.8 billion, which was a 23.8% decrease when compared to the same period last year, while the value of imports amounted to EUR 7.2bn, which was a 30.7% decrease relative to the same period last year. The export - import ratio equaled 53.2% and was higher if compared to the same period last year when it was 48.2%. The overall external trade in the Republic of Serbia for the period January – August 2009 amounted to EUR 11 billion, which was a 28.4% decrease compared to the same period 2008. According to a statement issued by the Statistical Office, in the period January-August this year, the trends of decreased imports and exports have been continued, as it was at the end of the previous year. The main cause of such a situation is world financial crisis, as it has caused decrease of economic activity.

Serbia Sells 2.0 Bln Dinars (21.5 Mln Euro) in 12-mo T-bills

Serbia’s Finance Ministry said on Wednesday it has sold out its 2.0 billion dinar ($31.4 million/21.5 million euro) offer of 12-month Treasury bills issued to finance budget deficit.

The average accepted price in the auction was equal to 89% of par and the accepted interest rate was 12.39%, the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry sold 200,000 T-bills with a nominal value of 10,000 dinars each. The government securities will mature on September 29, 2010.

In the previous auction of 12-month T-bills held on September 23 the ministry sold its entire offer of 1.0 billion dinars worth of government securities at an annual interest rate of 12.40%.

Serbia held its debut auction of 12-month T-bills on August 26.

Galeb Group Sees 2009 Net Profit Rising by One-fifth, Flat Revenue

Serbian metals company Galeb Group expects its net profit to rise by around one-fifth to some 5.5 million euro ($8.0 million) this year even though the company's revenue is likely to remain unchanged, its Vice President Dejan Dzagic said.

“Our revenue for the first nine months of 2009 is slightly higher, some 5.0% on the year, while our net profit grew some 20% on the year during the same period," Dzagic told SeeNews in an interview, adding that revenue rose thanks to optimised production.

About 31% of Galeb Group’s revenue comes from production of metal containers, while corporate electronics manufacturing makes up some 20%. sales of tools contribute about 15%, telecommunications make up roughly 13%, while manufacturing of safety equipment and steel products generate 12% of the company's revenue. Eight percent is made up of railway signalling systems.

The group, based in the town of Sabac in the Vojvodina autonomous province in northern Serbia, controls 40% of the corporate electronics market in the country and more than half of the market of railway signalling systems, Dzagic said.

The company had a consolidated net profit of 423 million dinars ($6.7 million/4.5 million euro) in 2008, down from 800 million in the previous year, data from Serbia’s Business registry showed. Galeb Group posted a consolidated net profit of 243 million dinars in 2006.

The group halved investments this year due to the global financial crisis, Dzagic said without elaborating.

“Over the past five years we invested about 10 million euro in new metals production equipment, this also included a new coil-cutting unit. We don’t use the new equipment for our own production needs only but we use it to produce metal sheets that are then sold to our competitors, making us competitors to our suppliers as well,” Dzagic said. In January, Galeb Group completed a 1.5 million euro investment in a new printing and varnishing machine.

“It helped us save on a myriad of levels. We cut the number of people working and reduced production hours. Another big benefit is that we now produce less waste and use less energy to roll out the same volume of production,” Dzagic also said.

Galeb Group, which has also installed a new tin can production unit that mainly services the Serbian chemical industry, plans to invest between 2.0 million euro and 3.0 million euro next year in expanding production of cans, crown caps and containers for local food industry.

“In 2004, we processed 2,000 tonnes of sheet metal, while this year we will process about 10,000 tonnes. Our goal is to process between 18,000 and 20,0000 tonnes annually in three years from now," Dzagic said.

The company invests 1.0 million euro per year on average in the development of corporate electronics.

“The bulk of this one million goes to salaries for those that create the software,” he said, adding the company expects to maintain its production in this segment at the current level. Galeb Group employs about 700 people.

The only segment of the company's portfolio that posted losses is the sale of tools.

“Domestic [industrial] production fell this year, so there is less demand,” Dzagic said.

Serbia’s August industrial output dropped 10.0% on the year after falling by an annual 15.4% in July and 14.1% in June, the country’s statistics office said earlier.

Galeb Group, which exports mainly to former Yugoslav republics, Russia and Italy, plans to boost exports to about 9.0 million euro this year from last year’s 5.0 million euro. The group has raised its exports of telecommunications equipment to neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina by 30% to 800,000 euro so far this year, Dzagic said.

Industricum Company signed purchase agreement for Matroz-Recycled Aluminium Instead of Paper

Yesterday in Sremska Mitrovica, the Economy Minister, Mladjan Dinkic and the President of Industricum Company, Jan Driessens signed an agreement on the purchase of the bankrupt public company Matroz and the construction of a new aluminum recycling factory. At the same time, the Mayor of Sremska Mitrovica, Branislav Nedimovic and the President of the Sremska Mitrovica City Assembly, Aleksandar Prodanovic signed a Memorandum with which the local self-government exempted the investor from paying local taxes. The investment in new factory amounts to EUR 75mn and this will be the third such factory in Europe, and the first in the region of Central and South-Eastern Europe. The new factory’s capacity will be 70,000 tons of recycled aluminum a year in the first stage and 150,000 tons a year in the second stage. The construction will be carried out in three stages in the period between 2010 and 2012, said Jan Driessens. The factory should be put in function in the spring of 2011, and almost the entire output will be exported.
