Maxi will sold by end of year

We will conclude the negotiations regarding the sale of up to 50 per cent of the shares of the Maxi supermarket chain by the end of this year and that is when we will know if we have new partners. Besides Delhaize of Belgium, we have received bids from multiple investment funds from both the EU and the USA. The reason for the sale does not lie in financial difficulties, as there are none. Across the globe, capital is put on market at the moment when it’s worth the most, when partners ask for it and when the move is in line with strategic development plans. We have such in Serbia, the region and in new markets,” Jelena Krstovic, director of corporate communications at Delta Holding, says for Blic.

Krstovic refused to disclose any details of the potential partners and the percentage of shares they are prepared to buy out, as it would breach the agreement on the confidentiality of all negotiations.

- “This is a landmark year for us. On 12 December we are marking ten years since the founding of Maxi, while next year on 4 February it will have passed two decades since the founding of Delta. We have shown longevity in turbulent times because the company is not managed by a single man, but a system. An management organization such as this one is the only one which has proved to be successful anywhere in the world,” added Krstovic.

Have there been any failures by Delta?
- “There have been some gaffes in terms of business decisions and staff acquisitions. Not all businesses are for every moment.”

Will the funds that are acquired after Maxi’s sale be predominantly invested in debt refinancing or back in strategic development?
- “If the sale is completed, one portion will be used for servicing running commitments, while the rest will go to the development of retail and agriculture. By the end of this year we are opening a Tempo hypermarket in eastern Sarajevo of over 7,500 square metres in which €6.75m has been invested and we will be employing 110 workers.”

What about Serbia?
- “By the end of year a Tempo will be opened in Kragujevac of around 9,000 square metres. That will be the start of the building of the first Delta Park, worth almost €25 million. Apart from Tempo, there will be specialised hypermarkets for technical goods, pets, and do-it-yourself equipment. There will be around 600 new employees.”

What are the plans for further investments in facilities in the EU?
- “In December we are opening a Tempo in Sofia, Bulgaria, which will be the biggest hypermarket in the Balkan, worth €25 million and with around 500 workers. Also we have plans for investment and building in the highly promising Albanian market.”

The business emphasis of Delta still remains in agriculture.
- “You can say that, although each and every segment is important for us. We have invested around €20 million into an orchard and cooling facility in Celarevo, and within the following three years we are planning to complete further investment worth €30 million. In association with Danish experts we have developed a pig farm in Stara Pazova, one of the most modern of its kind in the region. Agriculture should be the main segment of economy in Serbia. That is the tradition, but also a comparative advantage not only in the region, but in the whole of Europe. This is the time when we are aiming to position ourselves as the agricultural manufacturer of highest quality before Serbia joins the EU.”

Nemci uložili u Srbiju 1,5 mlrd. €

D&B rates Serbia as medium risk country
BELGRADE -- Dun & Bradstreet Corporation (D&B) rating agency kept Serbia's DB4d rating in the October report.

This places Serbia on the list of countries with medium risk investment.

The D&B analysis estimates that the business risk in Serbia is still high, given the decreased credit ability, increased number of bankrupt companies and poorer economic perspective.

What the report specifies as positive is the fact that the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) aid package has offered the necessary support to the country's financial sector, while the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) ensured the foreign banks doing business in Serbia.

The rating agency also reminds that in late August the IMF mission carried out the fifth revision of the Stand-By Arrangement with Serbia in the total value of EUR 2.9bn, the document signed in May 2009.

The IMF believes that the economic performances are satisfying and that a step forward has been made in the field of structural reforms, particularly those referring to health care, education and pension system, the D&B says in the report. However, the reforms regarding business environment are slower than expected, the analysis concludes.

Germany invests EUR 1,5mn over 10 years
MUNICH -- Over the last 10 years, Germany has invested a total of EUR 1.5bn in Serbia, Beta news agency reported.

This was heard on Monday at the Serbian-German business forum in Munich, held as part of the Days of Serbia in Bavaria event.

Germany, with EUR 700mn in aid for economic cooperation and development between 2000 and today, also makes it the largest bilateral donor in Europe, announced the Serbian Chamber of Commerce.

However, foreign trade between Serbia and Germany is characterized by Serbia's high goods deficit and an unfavorable structure of goods in export.

According to a survey conducted by the German Business Association in Serbia for 2010, German investors were positive about doing business in Serbia and 87 percent of German businesspeople said they would decide to invest in Serbia again.

The Days of Serbia in Bavaria event is being held on the 40th anniversary of the Serbian-Bavarian Commission.
