Proizvodnja novog automobila u FAS-u krajem maja 2012.

European banks are staying in the Balkans
Banks are not going to leave markets in east and southeast Europe, including Serbia, but favorable loans will still be very hard to get. In order for the economies of developing countries not to be brought to collapse, an agreement has been reached on yet another Vienna Initiative, partially modeled after the 2009 Vienna Initiative, which prevented a financial collapse in eastern Europe following the emerging of a crisis. National authorities, competent people in the European Union and international finance institutions have agreed that banks should continue their operations.

However, aims of the new initiative are far more modest than those from three years ago, when banks were asked to keep their investments in east and southeast Europe. They are now expected only to slow down the reduction of lending and prevent a funding crisis in that region.

- The Vienna Initiative can be good for us if we stop increasing our public debt, that is, if we manage not to exceed the limit set at 45% of GNP - says professor Milan Kovacevic, economic analyst.

- In that case, banks will stay here and approve loans with interest rates that may be even lower than now. If we continue to increase our debt and cross the limit, banks have the right to limit and increase the price of lending because of a risk, or even leave the country.

Key policy rate lowered to 9.5%
After reviewing current economic developments and estimates for the coming period, the Executive Board of the National Bank of Serbia voted to lower the key policy rate by 0.25 percentage points to 9.50 percent.

Inflation stayed on a downward path, ending 2011 somewhat lower than expected by the National Bank of Serbia, mainly due to the one-off effect of methodological changes in the calculation of fruit and vegetable prices, the central bank announced on its website.

Inflation is expected to continue down and possibly undershoot the target tolerance band at the end of the first quarter.

A part of this fall will be short-lived, resulting from the above methodological changes and other effects such as that of the administrative cap on trade margins and the so-called base effect of high monthly inflation rates recorded in the same period last year.

This taken into account, inflation is expected to stabilise around the target in the third quarter of the year, NBS stressed.

The Executive Board’s decision to lower the key policy rate further reflects the above inflation profile and heightened global fiscal and financial uncertainty sustained primarily by the unresolved eurozone crisis.

Future path of the key policy rate continues to depend strongly on the materialisation of risks stemming from the international environment and fiscal policy at home, and their impact on inflation.

The next rate-setting meeting is scheduled for 9 February.
