Ukraine's Donetsk Steel closest to buying Zelezara Smederevo
There are now three global steel makers in the race for the takeover of Smederevo-based Zelezara steelworks. At this moment, the Serbian government is the closest to deciding to entrust the Smederevo steel mill to the Ukrainian partner - Donetsk Steel, whose representatives have already visited facilities in Smederevo, spoken to the management and started negotiating the takeover.

In that way, Zelezara Smederevo could be sold to the Ukrainian magnate Viktor Nusenkis, the world's sixth richest man, who is engaged in ore exploitation and agriculture in addition to steel making.

- Negotiations have been intensified, and an agreement with the new partner could be reached within the next few months - people at 11 Nemanjina Street told Novosti daily.

Aside from the partner from Ukraine, a Chinese company is also very interested in investing in Zelezara. As it was announced by the Office of Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Jovan Krkobabic, the holding United Group CA from Luxembourg is also in the race, but with no real chance of winning it.

Igor Shamis, the boss of aforementioned holding, is ready to invest money through his company, which is made of Plzen Steel from Czech Republic and Bumash AD from Russia. Plzen Steel is a result of the merger of former steel mills that operated as part of Skoda.

Another person who has so far been mentioned as almost the certain partner of the state in the Smederevo steelworks is the Ukrainian steel king Rinat Akhmetov, owner of Metinvest. This company is part of his CSM Group and is among the world's top 20 steel makers. Metinvest's revenue in 2010 amounted to USD 9.4 billion. However, the chances that this Ukrainian company acquires former U.S. Steel Serbia are quite small at the moment.

FORTUNE

As many as 10 out of the 15 richest Ukrainians are engaged in the steel production and processing. Viktor Nusenkis ranks 521st on the Forbes' list, with the estimated fortune of USD 2.4 billion. His name is often associated with the Russian Orthodox Church because he is one of its most influential patrons.
