Belgrade awaits proposal for metro - Work on preliminary design starts late April 2012
he first line of the Belgrade metro could be opened for traffic in 2018, at earliest, if construction works commenced as soon as the project design was completed. A final version of a study on the Belgrade metro, the author of which is France's Egis, will be presented to the Task Force this week. If no objections are made to the study, the work on a preliminary design may start as early as in late April. Estimates are that it will take five years to complete the first phase of works.

According to the words of Zoran Ilic, the project director, a concept of the metro has been defined and the study has been taken in consideration by the Task Force, which has given certain suggestions and comments.

- We've considered proposals regarding the number of stations, locations where the metro could be built under the ground and where it could be constructed above the ground, as well as possibilities offered by the terrain in general. We've agreed on the best solution and made minimal changes to the study - says Ilic.

- The document will be returned to the Task Force in few days. There should not be some importance changes, so that we expect to get the green light from the Task Force and hope to start the work on a preliminary design until the end of this month. According to the agreement, we will have between 9 and 11 months to finish it.

The work on the project design will be done by Egis and financed by the French government. Ilic points out that this company is only in charge of designing, while the project utilization and the commencement of works in the field exclusively depend on funding.

The first line of the Belgrade metro should connect Tvornicka street in Zemun with Ustanicka street, via Kralja Aleksandra Boulevard.

40 million passengers a year

According to the plan, it should take about five years to complete the first phase of construction, which is expected to cost EUR 450 million. The number of passengers on this line is estimated at about 40 million a year.
